About

DJ Discovery: The Man Behind The Artist

My fascination with music began at an early age. Apart from damaging cassettes and scratching vinyl records, I knew how to work my parents Decca record/cassette player and all its functions when I was 3 years old. As I grew up, my tastes varied significantly and the influences from my parents were evident in what I liked. I listened to radio much and especially to 'Radio 1.' I listened to the DJ's and always wished that someday I could do what they were doing and get paid for it. It seemed like a dream job.

When I left school, I began working in a care of the elderly hospital as a nursing auxiliary and soon became aware of a hospital radio station in a neighboring hospital, which I joined as soon as I could. While awaiting nurse training, I was a hospital radio DJ at Radio Highcroft from October 1989 to January 1991. In January 1991, I moved to Wales to begin my nurse training. It wasn't long before I was also working with the hospital radio team at University Hospital of Wales; Radio Glamorgan.

Over the next few years I balanced DJ'ng in the basement of the University Hospital with my nurse training. In the end I had to less DJ'ing so I could concentrate on getting a job so I could get a "roof over my head."

After a concerted effort to get qualified as a nurse,  I continued with hospital radio when I could, mainly because of shift work which all nurses have to do. For many years I was like an anomaly in Radio Glamorgan, because my name never even appeared in the schedule for years as my show wasn't a permanent show.

My nursing career continuing slowly, it turned a corner in October 2000 when I was employed in the Neuroscience unit at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff.

Then, in 2005 something happened that would change my outlook on life; the way I look at it and how my future would be dictated. I was driving in Llantrisant when, after 13 years seizure-free, I had one. The car plowed straight into a roundabout. The car was a right off. I escaped with a singed arm from the air bag....no other injuries. This had a strange knock on effect to my nursing. The doctor told me I was no longer allowed to work night shifts and long stretches. Which all you nurses will appreciate you still do. This meant I could really only work a five day week. This meant all of a sudden, through this life changing event I was able to do alot more with my life. I was able to have a permanent show at Radio Glamorgan on Saturday nights with the added advantage of being able to DJ at weddings/birthdays and various other functions.

During the summer of 2005 I was also able to pursue another dream. My father presented me with a newspaper clipping from 'The Times.' This was about setting up your own radio station...I haven't looked back. I am now a successful programmer for 2 internet radio stations. March 2006 saw my love of dance and trance go a stage further. This is when I began digitally mixing and showcasing my mixes on a fantastic internet radio network: Translucent. In 2006 to add to the radio stations I created my podcast. This has now been successfully going for 1 year.

All of the above will have detailed descriptions on other pages on the site.
